You'd think that the shells are emptied before being adapted into sousaphones, but that is not the case. Conchonkos like to talk big about the immoralities of stripping a conch of its home, but really, it's just because keeping them in makes the instrument sound better. In fact, the arrangement is actually quite painful for the conch.
