Beats are a special type of equipment that can be used by any character, regardless of class. Unlike the skills granted by Mods, Beats cost no Hype to use, however, they also do not automatically scale with your bands stats. The Sampler class focusses on Beats and allows the character to equip more than one Beat and use multiple Beats at once in a single action.

Most Beats can be upgraded twice using Bops. Upgrading always increases the numeric stats (damage, healing) of the Beat. Some upgrades unlock additonal effects or improve existing effects beyond damage. This includes adding measure effects to the attack or making the attack inflict additional hits. Upgrading an enemy's Beat also unlocks their full entry in the Gear menu. The legendary Beats rewarded for defeating certain Bosses cannot be upgraded at all.

Aside from each character's signature beat, which they have from the very beginning, additional Beats can only be obtained as drops from defeated enemies. Each enemy has one, and only one Beat to drop, with drop rates varying between enemy types. The DJ Beatseek and Major Droppage Patches increase drop rates by a flat amount, so that even the lowest beat drop rate in the game, 2%, can be increased to a much more manageable 11% by using both. Battle length does not affect the drop rate, making the aforementioned patches and the Maximum Volume beat a powerful combo to hunt down missed beats in the later stages of the game.
